TV Industry Blog 3, Question 2 (Feb. 15)

Which two streaming services offer, or are developing, the best original TV series content? Which streaming services would benefit from creating more original content? Finally, do you think the streamers will eventually replace linear TV or continue to be a complementary/supplemental service for the majority of Americans?  Limit: 14 responses

Streaming services have really reached their peak popularity due to the pandemic. Most streaming services have started making their own original content, and a lot of the time, the streaming service’s original content is extremely popular. While some platforms have more original content than others, it appears as though many streaming services are starting to dabble in making original content.

In my opinion, I think that Netflix has some of the best original content. For many years, Netflix has been producing their own original TV series and movies, and they typically crank them out at a relatively fast pace. It appears as though I am not the only one who thinks this way, because in an article from MakeUseOf.Com, “It's unsurprising that many viewers consider Netflix to be the leader in original content among streaming services. The company has been around longer than its rivals and really set the tone for what a streaming service, and a streaming show, is”(Silver). Netflix has really done well with original series, some in particular being Squid Game, Tiger King, 13 Reasons Why, You, and Stranger Things. These shows have been extremely popular, with most of them getting renewed for more seasons. Squid Game is one of the most successful original series, and it “shattered records when it logged 1.65 billion hours of viewing during a 28-day period”(Yahoo Entertainment Staff”.

Another streaming service that offers and develops really successful original content is Disney Plus. Disney Plus offers plenty of original content, especially considering that they only offer television and movies made by Disney, or companies that Disney owns. One example of an extremely successful Disney Plus program is The Mandalorian. The Mandalorian has had “39 Emmy nominations and 14 Emmy Wins”(Emmy Awards). Disney Plus also has a ton of licensing rights over popular programs, like Star Wars, and have a plethora of opportunities to create original content that would be enjoyed by many different audiences of many different ages. Disney is also highly revered by a lot of people, and has a nostalgia factor that people crave, so Disney making spin-offs of their popular TV shows and movies proves to be extremely successful.

I think that one streaming service that could benefit from creating a fuller library of original content is Peacock. Peacock has some popular original programs, like Vigil and Saved By The Bell, but expanding it’s original programming could do it a world of good. In an article from the Hollywood Reporter, Susan Rovner, the chairman of entertainment content at NBCUniversal TV and Streaming, said her “mandate is to grow original content for Peacock, bring the ratings at NBC back up to No. 1, and maintain the health of [Peacock’s] linear cable networks”(O’Connell). Hopefully Susan Krovner lives up to her word and helps Peacock find success in the streaming war! I think that streaming will eventually replace linear TV, especially with our generation. I don’t know many people that still have cable, and the ones that do still have cable tend to be older. I think people enjoy the convenience streaming offers, as well as the price point.

Streaming has taken the world by storm in the last few years, but especially in the time of Covid and post-Covid. As I’ve talked about in previous blogs, I think streaming is here to stay and the services need to find their niche or accept defeat.
Popular streaming services like Netflix have led the way in terms of how powerful and popular streaming can be and a lot of that comes with its original series. Netflix consistently pushes out bingeable and trending series. In the last year, Squid Game and Bridgerton have taken the world by storm and those shows barely brush the surface of what Netflix has accomplished (Wawrychuk). In the past, Netflix was the leader of the original series, having immediate success with shows like Stranger Things and House of Cards. These shows started a new wave of competition in streaming and have led to more amazing shows being put out. I think it’s safe to say Netflix is a leader in creating original television content.
Following suit and tied for the next leaders in the original content are HBO Max and Disney+. Disney+ got the luck of the draw with the amount of IP it has, specifically with its access to Marvel. WandaVision was a success and other Marvel shows like Loki and Hawkeye are following suit. HBO Max is also a leader in its captivating dramas. Shows like Succession, The Sopranos, and Euphoria have proven to be extremely successful and popular (Wawrychuk). These streaming services have been successful because they have found their niche and have taken advantage or plan to take advantage of their IPs.

I don’t think it’s a secret that Paramount+ and Peacock are behind the curve when it comes to streaming content. Paramount and Peacock both have access to great content from the past and Paramount has great IPs, but to compete they both need to stand out and have at least one successful original. I think Peacock’s plans to continue with unscripted shows in the future may backfire for them (O'Connell and Casarez). As I’ve mentioned before, knowing your niche is important, but only doing that same thing over and over again isn’t usually beneficial in the long run. I know unscripted television is popular, and I’m a consumer of a lot of reality television, but I think for Peacock to be successful, they need to do an unscripted show that has a different concept than what we’ve seen before with Keeping Up With the Kardashians and the Real Housewives sagas. This may be what keeps them afloat, or what tears them down.
I think that linear television has been put on the back burner with streaming being a necessary function for companies to compete. I think we are ways away from linear television being completely replaced, but I would be lying if I said I thought that wasn’t where it was going. In the society we live in, there is a need for freedom and control in all aspects of life, even in media consumption. Streaming in television, movies, and music provides that on a smaller scale. A survey done by the Harris Poll shows that the majority of people have been streaming over using cable (Gruenwedel). “Seventy percent of Americans who watched TV between mid-November and mid-December 2021 streamed, including 82% of 18-54 year-olds.” People don’t want to have to wait around for their favorite shows and movies anymore, they want immediate access. I think the television and movie worlds are changing and companies can either get with it or get out.

Video streaming services has been one the most popular ways for people to watch their favorite tv shows and movies. Video streaming service has grown over the years as it seems that there is a new video streaming service that comes out every year. One the most popular things that video streaming services are doing is creating their own original tv shows for their platform. One of the most popular video streaming service, Netflix, has been and still is creating their own original tv shows for their platform. According to Collider.com, “40% of the streaming service’s library is made up of Netflix original titles- or projects branded as original programming.” I am not surprised by the statistic as Netflix continues to make their own original content. In 2022, Netflix is still planning to even release more original content in 2022. Netflix is the leader of making original content. One show that really helped Netflix become successful in original content was the show called House of Cards. House of Cards immediately became popular when it was released, and the show helped Netflix gain more popularity. The other video streaming service that offers best original Tv series is Disney+. Even though Disney+ is considered a newer video streaming service, Disney+ has made and is still developing new original Tv content. Disney+ can make so much original content because of their IP. Disney+ has made popular tv content like The Mandalorian which instantly became popular. Disney+ is making Marvel original tv shows which has gained a lot of viewers since so many people are fans of Marvel. Disney+ has a huge advantage over other video streaming service platforms because of their IP content.

Streaming services have taken over how we watch television. But owning, and offering content is not enough to keep services competitive with each other. Creating original content is one of the most important aspects for a streaming company. According to a study by Parrot Analytics, “TV series owned by Disney have the largest share of audience demand on streaming platforms. Netflix is in the lead for U.S. demand for series content, regardless of if it’s original or outsourced” (Forristal, 2021). Researchers continued, stating, “demand for original and exclusively licensed content is a key leading indicator of subscriber growth for SVOD platforms” (Forristal, 2021). I don’t think it's much of a surprise to anyone to see Netflix at the top for original content. They create an immense amount of content, and essentially work on a trial-and-error basis to see what gets popular. An article by Bloomberg discussed an interview with TV producer Brent Montgomery. In this article Montgomery states, “Netflix was really easy to pitch the last few years because almost anything you could take to cable you could take to Netflix” (Shaw, 2021). Netflix puts original content as a top priority, and it seems to be working for them. Disney+ also highly prioritizes original content, as seen through the uses of their IP’s, like The Marvel Universe television series, as well as creating “The Mandalorian” (Shaw, 2021).

There are of course platforms that are lacking when it comes to original content. In my opinion, the platform doing the worst in this area could be one of two options. Peacock for one, is the lowest on that list for many. They have essentially no original content, compared to Netflix and Disney+. They seem to focus their original content on reality television and documentaries. In an interview with Susan Rover, new chairman of entertainment content at NBCUniversal TV and Streaming, Rover discusses Bravo Television shows and how that is a huge opportunity for Peacock. She says “Bravo fans do want to see this life behind the golden beads — but it has a much larger range of women. Not everyone has as much wealth. It also deals with religion. That all appeals to the Bravo audience because that show premiered abnormally well” (O’Connell, 2021). The platform would most definitely benefit from more original series like “Housewives”, since that could be that platform's niche, and draw in new customers. Along with Peacock, I think Roku television could benefit from more original content. Although Roku isn't one of the major streaming services, they offer a unique service where you can download apps from other services. From what we discussed in class, I think Roku would skyrocket up the list is they continued to give easy access to other platform service, with the addition of more original Roku content.

I think the further we go into streaming television, we will never be able to go back to cable, or linear, viewing. Just within the past few years, viewers' desire for immediate streaming has increased. People are willing to pay for multiple services, just so they do not have to wait a week or so to see the show they like. Also, with sports programs becoming only available to stream on platforms, many people will choose to switch over to streaming only. There is almost no point in paying for cable television if all your favorite old shows, movies, and possible new originals, are available on streaming services. Especially as a college student, who hasn't used cable television in four years, I don’t see myself moving into the real world and watching cable television instead of streaming services. Even award shows, and live events can be watched and streamed without linear television. I think with this generation, a lot of us will choose between the two options, and streaming will win out and traditional TV will become obsolete.

Streaming services are taking the world by storm when it comes to offering and developing the best original TV series content. Yahoo Entertainment capitalized 2021 as being an exceptionally good year to be Netflix. It was a huge year of breakout success for Netflix amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Many even say it is Netflix’s world and we are just living in it. Netflix has firmly established itself as the first name in streaming for global households (Yahoo Entertainment Staff, 2021). Netflix’s strong suit is producing global based original shows that resonate worldwide. One show in particular would be the South-Korea produced Squid Game that broke records when it logged 1.65 billion hours of viewing in only a 28-day period (Yahoo Entertainment Staff, 2021). Other international hits include Lupin from France that has 70 million views and Money Heist from Spain with 65 million views (Yahoo Entertainment Staff, 2021).

Additionally, Disney+ is a strong contender in the streaming wars with their original TV series content. 2021 proved that the Marvel Studios universe could be enjoyed at home as well. Marvel Studios successfully debuted five Disney+ series throughout 2021 (Yahoo Entertainment Staff, 2021). This included Wanda Vision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If? and Hawkeye. Each show told its own story but also fed back into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Series’ such as these helped feed Disney+’s current subscriber base and helped them gain even more viewers. Also, you cannot forget the success of their Star Wars based series as well. The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett prove to continue being a huge success for Disney+ too.

Aside from the top competitors in the streaming wars, there are still some services that can benefit from creating more original content. Specifically, Hulu, who for years has had the biggest advantage for serving up the most scripted programming released on broadcast networks (Spangler, 2021). Yet, Hulu will be facing an existential crisis if they do not start producing a regular cadence of original hits (Spangler, 2021). It is clear that the service is lacking and needs to create a bigger library of originals. Hulu is known to be spending dramatically less than their competitors Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime on original programming (Spangler, 2021). Hulu has been improving on their originals and produced Only Murders in the Building that came out in 2021. Hulu needs to increase their frequency of original content to gain new viewership and be considered a platform with successful original series.’

Furthermore, I do believe streaming services will eventually replace linear TV soon. A leading factor in this would be the increasing trends of cord-cutters. Cord-cutters are viewers who decide to cancel or “cut the cord” on their cable or satellite subscriptions (G., 2022). The latest statistics on cord-cutting shows that nearly 30% of US consumers planned to cut the cord in 2021 (G., 2022). Pew Research found that in 2021 only 56% of Americans still watched satellite or cable TV which was an alarming drop by 20% (G., 2022). It is critical to view how much growth streaming has had compared to linear TV. Netflix alone had around 210 million subscribers by the first quarter of 2021 (G., 2022). On the other hand, this number can be compared to the biggest cable TV provider Comcast who only has 22.1 million subscribers (G., 2022). Alone, 90% of young people in America prefer watching television through the internet (G., 2022). Hence, I do see streaming taking over linear TV because of the recent changing trends of American’s media consumption.

In terms of original content, I would argue that Netflix and HBOMax are developing the best versions of it. In “From ‘Squid Game’ to ‘The Morning Show’ Here Are The Winners and Losers of 2021 Television,” the author provides reasoning for why Netflix can be considered the worldwide king of streaming. The main reasoning they highlight is that Netflix premiered Bridgerton and Squid Game that ended up becoming two global successes (Yahoo Entertainment Staff 1). Squid Game was so successful that it logged 1.65 million billion hours of viewing during a 28-day period which is double than what Bridgerton’s viewing statistics showed (Yahoo Entertainment Staff 2). The strengths of Netflix as a streaming site is that they produce global content and provide access to shows and films that aren’t just US based. Squid Game is a show that I believe has a large global presence because it touches upon topics that are relevant to global audiences who specifically get the underlying meaning of how political and economic constructs can affect individuals. Shows, such as Squid Game are successful, but as we discussed in class, Netflix has a small pool of media that ends up being really successful while they have a lot of content that tends to be unsuccessful. Therefore, I wouldn’t say that they need to make more original content but choose to make content that can be globalized such as Squid Game.

HBO Max already makes several original shows. They specifically have been successful with Euphoria amongst younger viewers and create content that is targeted to specific groups of people. Yahoo Entertainment reports that Succession did so well that it could be considered as much of a success as The Sopranos. Other max originals such as Love Life and Sex Lives of College Girls either had a successful first season or maintained its success in the second season (Yahoo Entertainment Staff 2). The strengths behind these originals is that the characters have very personalized narratives and are significant to audiences that don’t necessarily get that representation in the media. For example, the second season of Love Life, revolves around the story of Marcus Watkins who struggles with understanding his identity as a black man and the journey of finding his spouse. Therefore, HBO Max serves as a streaming platform that is looking into the future by expanding these narratives. With that said, a weakness of their platform is that they are not as global as other platforms and could use that as an opportunity to create originals by non-American creators.

  8. Variety reports sports networks, CBS & NBC, and INSP as the winners of the most-watched television networks (Schneider). This shows that people are primarily still watching linear television for sports. The only way I see a decline in linear tv is if streaming companies decide to only primarily stream sport events rather than broadcasting them on network tv. Forbes highlights the challenges with digital streaming live mega sporting events. The biggest challenge that Forbes writer, Maury Brown, highlights is the service issues of supporting millions of users on hundreds of devices. Philip Swan, who is featured in the article, says that when several people stream at the same time, it can put a strain on the system delivering the data (Brown). This can affect the video quality that viewers get of the program. Considering the fact that people pay close attention to sports media or use it as a way to spend time with other people, I would say that this technical problem would frustrate watchers. Therefore, even if there was an option to stream, I still think viewers would choose to watch on live television because it is a reliable way to watch and there isn’t as much concern with combatting technical issues. For this reason, I argue that sports media will keep linear television alive.

There are many streaming services on the market right now and a few of them are on the rise. Original shows created by streaming platforms are becoming popular. One of the most popular streaming services, Netflix, is known for creating original content called ‘Netflix Originals’. Most of these shows are extremely popular within Netflix’s audience and have gone viral within many social media platforms. I think Netflix has and will continue to create the best original TV series content. For reference, some of Netflix’s most popular originals include Stranger Things, Outer banks, You, Squid Game, Ozark, and many more. Personally, I think these shows and their other Netflix original content will keep Netflix on the top. Squid Game was a huge success for Netflix. This show was in Korean and still broke the record of watch hours on Netflix. Yahoo Entertainment states “The South Korea-produced Squid Game shattered records when it logged 1.65 billion hours of viewing during a 28-day period…” (Yahoo Entertainment Staff). Based on Squid Game and other Netflix Originals, I think Netflix is one of the best streaming services that is developing the best original TV series content. Another contender to run against Netflix is Disney+.

Disney+ is a close second to Netflix when creating their own original content. The only upper hand that Disney+ has is that they are an actual TV channel and almost all their content is deemed as original content. Disney+ only offers TV shows and movies made by Disney or companies that Disney owns which Netflix does not do. Most of their originals include movies and shows from twenty-plus years ago which they are still making money from. Almost all of Disney+’s content is nostalgic, so they have a wide demographic for their audience which greatly benefits them. What Hi-Fi? makes a very good point about Disney+’s content, “Disney Plus' catalog might be five times smaller, but it's incredibly rich” (What Hi-Fi?). This is totally true, and I believe that Disney+ does have less original content but way better content compared to Netflix. To increase their audience and income, Disney+ should create more original spin-offs on Disney shows that were popular.

I think the two streaming services that need to catch up and create more original content are Peacock and Paramount+. These two streaming services have a small library of content and don’t really have many successful shows like Disney+ and Netflix do. Both streaming services can become popular if they figure out their niche. Having a niche is super important because consumers want consistency. For example, if Peacock only had original murder mysteries on their platform, then this would appeal to a certain demographic which can increase their audience size. Paramount+ has a lot of good IPs and I think they should take advantage of that while they can. Just like Disney+, I think it would be beneficial to create spin-offs on popular shows.

I do think that streaming services will eventually take over linear TV for most Americans. The Deadline wrote an article about how the viewership of news channels has been rapidly decreasing and news channels are worried. The Deadline also states that news channels are putting a lot of effort into their streaming services because of how many TV viewers they lost (Ted Johnson). I think all types of linear TV have been decreasing as well and will put to an end because of streaming services. Linear TV should be worried because of the continuous rise of streaming services.

With Digital technology rapidly improving, it is no surprise that streaming services have seen an uptick in users. One reason why streaming services have seen an uptick in users is because of the pandemic, which has forced many people to work from home, giving them more time to stream content as they do not have to travel to and from work.

I tend to stream a show or movie every day as it is a big stress reliever. When it comes to who develops the best original TV series content, I would have to say that Netflix is the best at it as they are constantly producing new content. It seems like they are producing new and original content at a previously unimaginable rate. Netflix has been around longer than many of their competitors, so they have been able to produce original content for much longer, even have “40% of the streaming service’s library is not made up of Netflix Original titles — or projects branded as original programming, not available on any other service. (Boccella 2021). One original Netflix series that has garnered much success was Squid Games. There was a stretch of about a month where the only thing people were talking about was Squid Games, and for a good reason. Squid Games are perhaps the most successful series Netflix has ever produced as the show “logged 1.65 billion hours of viewing during a 29-day period.” (Yahoo entertainment Staff). Another popular show that Netflix has produced is Ozark. Although it takes about a year for a new season to come out, the show is worth the wait because of all the intricacies involved with the show. Another streaming service that is good at producing content is Disney+. Not only do they produce original TV series, but also original movies. One of my favorite shows on Disney+ is the Mandalorian, which is about someone in the Star Wars Universe, and it takes place roughly 30 years before the 7th episode in the Star Wars Franchise. Disney+ has also had success with original shows such as WandaVision, Loki, and Hawkeye, all from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Having access to the MCU has created and will continue to create many opportunities for Disney+ to produce great original content.

One streaming service that would benefit from creating more original content is HBO Max. Although HBO Max has produced original shows such as Succession and Hacks, it would behoove them to produce original shows resembling Entourage and Ballers. HBO Max must broaden their horizons when it comes to producing original content, mainly because of its price for a subscription. If HBO looks at original content produced by other streaming sites, they will become more successful once they know what kinds of shows are successful.

    1. I would say that streamers will eventually replace linear TV because of the option to watch something whenever you want, rather than waiting for something to be on at a specific time with commercials. Sports networks will continue to thrive with linear TV because there is really no point in streaming a game after it has already concluded. The NFL continues to have a massive number of viewers, which is why “Not one, but two broadcast networks managed not to decline vs. 2020.” (Schneider 2021). Amazon was recently awarded exclusive streaming rights to Thursday Night Football, which will undoubtedly cause many people to subscribe to Amazon Prime to watch the games. Because of this, I believe that this is just the start of streaming taking over linear TV.

Streaming services have been one of the most popular ways for audiences to consume their favorite tv shows, movies or other streaming media. A big part of the success of these services is due to their production and distribution of original content. Many other services could overall benefit from putting out their own original content and strive to push its competitors.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these services have had a major increase in subscriptions, which can be comparable to the services post-covid.

Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services and has benefited heavily from producing and developing their own original content. Squid Games is one of Netflix’s most-watched series in history, pulling in 1.65 billion hours of viewing in the 28 days since its premiere. This show has made U.S viewing of South Korean streaming shoot up 200%, which led Netflix to pick up other Korean- language hits (Schneider, 2022). Netflix also released originals such as Stranger Things and Bridgerton that sparked immediate success among their viewers. Disney+ and HBO Max are also delivering original content that has increased subscriptions and boosted ratings. In 2021 alone, Marvel debuted five Disney+ series over the course of the year including WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If? and Hawkeye (Yahoo Entertainment, 2021). HBO Max’s original hit series Euphoria has broken its mass rating records with the premiere of its second season. According to Them.us, “Digital viewing for Sunday’s Euphoria episode was more than nine times higher than the premiere of season one, and four times higher than the first season finale.” This demonstrates that services such as Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Max will continue to increase their subscriptions and ratings based on the original content they put out.

While several streaming services are succeeding in the business, there are still a number of players who could benefit from releasing original content, such as Paramount+ and Peacock. These are streaming services that are both relatively new, so they have been mostly distributing content from other networks. Original content will help set them apart and stand out against other competitors. Since Peacock is owned by NBC, there has to be a distinguishing factor between the two to push people to subscribe. Susan Rovner, who works for NBC & Peacock, stated there was little to no room when it comes to scripted content on cable. (O'Connell, 2021). I think if Peacock is only producing unscripted content, it doesn't give their audience different types of genres to choose from. I think it would be best if they switched it up and gave their audience something completely different, making them stand out against its competitors.

I believe that moving forward, linear tv will slowly decrease, leaving room for streaming services to dominate. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the use of streaming services increased astronomically, and more people than ever were using it almost every single day. It was a way to make watching your favorite content become more efficient and accessible, which is what people will pay their money for. However, according to Variety.com, sports networks such as CBS and NBC, are the most watched television networks. During the pandemic, neither of these networks declined in ratings and actually managed to increase ratings instead. “NBC ended 2021 up 9% in total viewers and up 7% in adults 18-49, while CBS was flat in viewers and up 1% in 18-49” (Scnieder, 2022). Overall, I do believe the majority of Americans will switch to streaming services, however, I think sports networks could be the only linear tv that can manage to keep increasing within the age of streaming services.

  13. Streaming has transitioned into the primary way for people to consume their media as cord cutting has become a modern-day phenomenon. Interestingly enough, “30% of US consumers plan to cut the cord in 2021” (Nick G, 2022), which is not even including those who have already made the jump. With this, streaming services have the pressure to step up their game to compete with both cable television and other streaming platforms. As Netflix leads the way for being one of the first platforms, streaming services have begun to put their focus on creating original content. Netflix was seen as a major winner in 2021 due to original shows such as Squid Games and Bridgerton which ranked in the top charts for hours consumers spent viewing. Squid Games racked up “1.65 billion hours of viewing during a 28-day period” (Yahoo Entertainment Staff, 2021). As successful as Netflix is, they have also received backlash from media critics who claim that Netflix is prioritizing quantity over quality when it comes to original content. Specifically, and in regard to Tiger King 2, critics said that Netflix was “mauling leftovers as ‘bargain basement’ television” (Yahoo Entertainment Staff, 2021). Despite this, Netflix’s plan to push out original content regularly has generated major success.

HBO Max is another service that is paving the way for original streaming content. There is major potential for HBO Max to have the same kind of fan base as Netflix and Disney +. HBO has produced some of the most successful and popular content recently including shows such as The Sopranos, Succession, and Mare of Easttown (Yahoo Entertainment Staff, 2021). HBO Max has created original content that has generated a lot of buzz on social media and some of the most awards in television. HBO Max has positioned themselves to be one of the more popular platforms with the original content they have now. According to rating services like the Nielson ratings, platforms like Hulu and Disney + make a bigger mark. However, according to Variety “Nielsen currently doesn’t report viewing on platforms including WarnerMedia’s HBO Max” (Spangler, 2022). This shows how HBO Max’s success is not always accounted for, but their potential to be among the best is very high.

  14. The service that should be developing more original series is Apple TV+. Though they have a more carefully curated assortment of original content, their content has earned awards and popularity. Shows like The Morning Show and Ted Lasso have jump started Apple TV+ into becoming a competitor. According to Silver, Apple TV + “invested in deals with well-known talent and brought them to its service; anyone who buys an Apple device gets a year of the service for free” and “is almost entirely about original content” (Silver, 2021). This quality of Apple TV+ sets them apart.

In years to come, I believe that streaming services will continue to become more popular. I don’t think that they will replace linear television entirely. When just talking about streaming television and movies, I don’t think that streaming has the potential to completely replace that of linear television. However, with the development of live television options on streaming of things like sporting events, award shows, and other live events, I think this gives streaming the chance to make linear tv obsolete. According to Tech Jury, “in 2021, only 56% of Americans watch satellite or cable TV” (Nick G, 2022). With this being said, a high percentage of Americans have already made the switch. Within this percentage, Tech Jury also talks about how almost “all Americans aged 25-34 access TV content through the internet” (Nick G, 2022). This shows how there is potential for streaming to take over linear TV by the time the people in this age range become heads of households.

There are multiple different streaming platforms, which forces them to offer different content in order to compete with one another over subscriptions. But the two services that currently offer, or are developing, the best original TV series content is Netflix and
First off, it's safe to say Netflix takes the lead in popular original content. Netflix is known for valuing quantity over quality of content. But this tends to work in their favor since they have had original content become huge successes. For instance, shows like Bridgerton and Squid Game became really popular over this past year, shattering records, and making Netflix the first name in streaming for global households (Yahoo). It’s also worth noting that Netflix offers 12 seasons of Criminal Minds, which was the most streamed TV show in the U.S. last year (Sprangler). This is a huge win for Netflix since this show attracts a large demographic of viewers.
Following Netflix, I would say Hulu offers the next best content. This can be seen by viewing the chart by Variety titled, “2021 Top 15 Streaming Programs”. This chart displays the first 9 programs that originated on Netflix. It is not until the 10th program on the list that originated on a different platform, which was the show The Handmaid's Tale from Hulu (Sprangler). It is safe to say that Hulu is not close to dominating the industry like Netflix, but is definitely a runner up.

Speaking of, there are plenty of streaming services that still need to step up their creation in original content. For instance, Apple TV+ is one of the many services that needs to ramp up more original content. Unlike Netflix, Apple TV+ values quality over quantity of content. Although Apple TV+ has had successful shows, like Ted Lasso, there is room for new creations in the original content area (Silver). I think developing more content would not only improve the platform overall, but also create more competition for leading services like Netflix. This will make it more worthwhile for the cost of the subscription for their customers, and make them more likely to stay with a bigger variety of original content. And create more competition for leading services like Netflix.
As these platforms continue to grow and become more popular, it raises the question whether streamers will eventually replace linear TV, or continue to be a supplemental service for the majority of Americans. In my opinion, streaming services will without a doubt take over and become the main and only way to watch shows. Streaming platforms have proved to be successful and worth the subscription since they provide an easier and more efficient way for consumers to watch their favorite series. With that being said, it is only a matter of time before cable TV is completely out of the picture.

Netflix and Hulu have the best original content. From original movies and TV shows. There’s always something good to watch on both platforms. The pandemic allowed many to stay in and start new series. Then binge watching shows become the new “norm” of 2020 and 2021. According to one source, “ Netflix has pumped billions of dollars into original programming- but overall, its library of older licensed TV shows far outperforms homegrown hits like “Squid Game” or “Bridgerton”. (Spangler, Todd. “Surprise! 'Criminal Minds' Was 2021's Most-Streamed TV Show in the U.S.”) Netflix does spend a lot of money for original content but it seems to pay off because a lot of shows are very popular. Take Squid Games for example. It became insanely popular in just a few weeks. According to Variety, “ Although not technically a part of what we’re discussing here, it’s hard to deny the power of “Squid Game”. Netflix’s dystopic South Korean thriller has dominated the pop culture zeitgeist since its worldwide debut on Sept. 17. The K- drama, starring Lee Jung-jae (Gi-hun), Park Hae-soo (Sang-woo) and Jung Ho-yeon (Sae-byeok), is apparently the most- watched series in Netflix’s history– pulling in 1.65 billion hours of viewing in the 28 days since its premiere, spending 13 consecutive weeks on Netflix’s Top 10 list for non-English television series, and consistently reappearing on Nielsen’s SVOD Top 10 lists for original programming”. (Schneider, Michael. “Top 100 Telecasts of 2021: 'NCIS,' 'Yellowstone,' NFL Dominate, as Oscars Fail to Make the Cut.”)
I think Apple TV would benefit from having more original content. I know they aren’t like Netflix or Disney + that have new shows added weekly. But I think to keep customers engaged and loyal to Apple TV they need more. Especially since many households have multiple streaming service subscriptions. If you aren’t happy with the content on Apple TV you can just cancel and not miss much. Or Apple TV should join forces with Peacock, maybe have both streaming services for twelve dollars a month. Since they both aren’t as popular as Netflix, Hulu or Disney + that would be a dynamic duo. That would keep users subscribed.
I personally believe streaming will take over TV. There are many reasons why. The first is if you are in the VRBO or Airbnb business, you are more likely to use streaming services. Instead of paying for cable, that might not get used every day. When people are on vacation they might enjoy having a family movie night. Another reason is streaming services allow you to watch what you want, when you want to watch it. Instead of cable, where if a movie you want is on that day at 8, you have to wait all day to watch. Lastly, the price difference. According to Digital Trends, “And as part of the Disney Bundle, it’s a better deal than ever. That’s the plan that gets you Hulu, Disney + and ESPN+ for just $14 a month. And that’s basically you getting three streaming services for the price of two, which is tough to beat”.( Perry, Nick. “The Best Hulu Original Series Right Now (February 2022).” Digital Trends, Digital Trends,) This is very true that $14 for three streaming services is unheard of. That is a huge reason for Hulu’s success and genius marketing plan.

Streaming became really popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. In my opinion, Netflix and Disney+ offers and develops the best original TV series content. Starting with Netflix. Netflix had a huge blockbuster last year called Squid Game. Squid Game shattered records when it got 1.65 billion hours of viewing during a 28-day period (Alter). However, Squid Game was not the only blockbuster from Netflix last year. Also, Bridgerton and Maid were a huge success. Netflix creates a lot of content, and has content for everyone. They also trying to extent their reality TV shows. “Last year, three of the 10 most-popular shows on Netflix were unscripted: “Tiger King,” “The Last Dance” and “Too Hot to Handle.”” Reality TV is quick and cheap to make according to scripted TV series. Furthermore, Disney+ also has a lot of great content because first of all they have all their historical original Disney movies. They have Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Star. Compared to Netflix, Disney+ does not have a lot of content, but the content that they release is good. I also do think Disney has a certain reputation that they will not make reality shows like “Too Hot to Handle”. Talking about releasing good content. In November 2021, Disney released Encanto, a new Disney movie about a 15-year-old girl that lives in a town where everyone gets an extraordinary power except herself. “Disney+ adds 12 million customers” (Faughnder). This is partly because of the success from Encanto. Disney also does a great job with their song tracks in their new movies.

Peacock would definitely benefit from creating more original content. According to an article from the Hollywood Reporter, Susan Rovner, who is the chairman of entertainment content at NCBUniversal TV and streaming. She said that “My mandate is to grow original content for Peacock, bring the ratings at NBC back up to No. 1, and maintain the health of our linear cable networks.” (O’Connell). Peacock needs one blockbuster, and then their numbers will sky rock.

I do think streamers will eventually replace linear TV. However, it is not going to be easy because television offers live sports and news channels which are popular during election season. A good example is the Super Bowl. So, much money goes on in those live sports events that is going to be really hard to switch that to a streaming service. I do think a long time from now streaming services will get so powerful that they will buy TV companies, and slowly create a platform where everything is available on. So, it is even more convenient for the costumers.

As we’ve talked about in class, and are quite literally living through this transformation, streaming services are here to stay over traditional TV networks. Especially post-Covid, people want services where they can stream their favorite, or original content, whenever and wherever they would like through the comforts of their homes. However, in these streaming wars, there are some sites that are clear leaders. Personally, I believe Netflix and Disney+ are two clear leaders in this “war” and here’s why:

Well, if you don’t want to take just my opinion, Yahoo names Netflix the “worldwide king of streaming”. The South Korea-produced show Squid Games alone logged 1.65 billion hours of viewing during a 28-day period (Yahoo, 2021). This is more than double the hours of viewing UK’s Bridgerton attracted, and France’s Money Heist and the US’s Maid (Yahoo, 2021). In fact, Netflix had 14 of the most viewed acquired TV shows of the year, according to Neilson’s streaming data (Spangler, 2022). I think it’s Netflix's ability to produce quality original content, post international content, and allow us to watch some of our favorites that is why Netflix is the clear leader in these streaming wars. Criminal Minds was the most viewed show in 2021, according to Neilson (Spangler, 2022). Cocomelon acquired the second most hours viewed (Spangler, 2022). And as stated, the international shows like Squid Games racked in billions of hours of viewing as well. According to Spangler, Disney+ came into the race with their movies with Luca, Moana, Raya the Last Dragon, and Moana (Spangler, 2022). But what about cable networks? Will the midterm election bring them to make audiences return to cable? My answer is yes. I think there are some things that people don’t want to stray away from, and watching the midterm elections on Fox, CNN, or MSNBC. This brings me to the next question of “do you think the streamers will eventually replace linear TV or continue to be a complementary/supplemental service for the majority of Americans?”

There’s already signs of this happening. According to CNBC, “Comcast’s NBCUniversal and ViacomCBS recently signed an 11-year deal with the NFL, whose games are perennially the most popular content on TV.” And this is good news for broadcast stations who have leverage to keep increasing retransmission fees. (Sherman, 2021) However, Peacock and Paramount+ also have the right to stream NFL games, allowing room for cord cutting, which is why streaming services are taking the lead. (Sherman, 2021) There already is the invention of NextGenTV, which essentially is 4K over-the-air TV that can be repurposed for streaming. It’s accessible with new smart TVs that come with a built-in tuner. Sony, Samsung and LG already make them. (Sherman, 2021) NextGenTV requires the purchase of a new TV, but with prices rising drastically for streaming services, this might be the new future of TV. Even with this new invention, broadcasters are going to have to find a way to work to replace linear TV to keep up with this new streaming society. CNBC says “the key for broadcasters is to start thinking of new revenue streams in case retransmission fees eventually plateau and decline, Perry said. The key ingredient, he said, is more creative hyperlocal programming that only a community broadcaster can provide -- content that goes beyond local news, which appeals to an increasingly older audience.” (Sherman, 2021)

“The focus for local broadcasters really needs to be ‘let’s get our viewers something compelling to watch that you can’t find anywhere else,’” said Perry. “Let’s leverage what we do best, which is covering our communities. And then having done that, let’s bring our local advertisers into the mix. That’s the winning formula.” (Sherman, 2021) It’s really interesting to see how TV will change, and I love being in the generation that gets to experience this change.

Streaming services have begun to take over the entertainment industry. It has been the new and next big thing since the COVID-19 pandemic. We have seen many new streaming services that have been released throughout the past few years. Many services create their own original content, and many have gone viral, making some streaming services more popular than others.

Netflix has been one of the most used streaming services for years now. They are known for creating popular original content. Some of the most popular shows in the world come from Netflix originals in 2021. They released shows such as Squid Game, with 1.65 billion hours of viewing in only 28 days, making it the most watched show of 2021 on Netflix. This is followed by Bridgerton with 625 million hours, Lupin with 70 million views, Maid with 67 million views, and Money Heist with 65 million views (Yahoo Entertainment Staff). There are so many new and popular streaming services that have tried to compete with Netflix, but as we have seen this year, Netflix has had the most success with their global original shows, “Evan as still-young streaming services like Disney+, AppleTV+ and Peacock scored breakout successes amidst the various waves of the coronavirus pandemic, Netflix’s familiar “Tudum” intro was heard in the most households worldwide thanks to blockbuster shows like Squid Game and Maid” (Yahoo Entertainment Staff).

As I just mentioned, one of the streaming services that we have seen have a great breakout is Disney+. They have had huge success since their release in 2019. Many people wanted to subscribe to this streaming service because they began re-releasing all of Disney’s old TV shows and movies. It gave many people a sense of nostalgia. But since then, they have begun to create original content and it has been a big hit. In 2021 they had 11 of the top 15 films on Nielsen’s 2021 list with, Luca with 10.6 billion minutes, Moana with 8.9 billion, Raya and the Last Dragon with 8.3 billion, and Frozen II with 5.7 billion (Spangler). Disney+ is taking advantage of a huge market right now by having old TV shows and movies for adults and teens, but also creating new content for the younger generation.

A streaming service that I think would benefit from creating more original content is Peacock+. The creation of this streaming service was at first halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. When it did launch, they offered “only a handful of original shows” (Frank, Wilkinson, VanDerWerff, and Abad-Santos). Many people have described these shows as “fine” or “just okay”. When you are a new streaming service releasing new original content, that is not something you want to hear. Their library of original content just isn’t developed yet, “There’s a ton of good stuff, but when you actually start digging through it, there’s not as much good stuff as there is on HBO Max, Hulu, or Netflix” (Frank, Wilkinson, VanDerWerff, and Abad-Santos). Once they figure out the direction they want to go in with original content, I think they will begin to gain popularity.

I think streaming services will become the new way we watch TV shows and movies. Ever since 2020, we have seen such an outbreak and growth in the popularity of streaming services. So many new ones have been created and are still being created. Streaming services have the opportunity to reach a global audience, which is not something that linear TV has the opportunity to do all the time. As I mentioned earlier Squid game, a South Korea-produced show broke records and was able to hit 1.65 billion hours of viewing in only 28 days (Yahoo Entertainment Staff). This is not something that cable or linear TV would be able to do.

Today's most popular streaming services are at war with each other. This war is fought by bidding, buying and producing new content to ultimately gain the highest number of subscribers or viewers. In my own opinion, I enjoy Netflix and its original content more than any other platform. Today's streaming services leading with the best original content would be both Netlfix and Disney+. According to Shaw (2021), Netflix is the number one buyer of unscripted TV programming compared to all other streaming services. Netlfix’s Squid Games and Bridgerton both were original shows that came out recently and were both huge successes (Yahoo Entertainment Staff, 2021). Netflix’s diverse categories of content is a huge opportunity for the company as a whole. Netflix has shows and movies for almost everyone to enjoy. This means that as a company, Netflix is able to purchase more content and take chances on content that other streaming services might turn down. Netflix’s content and buying strategies are almost the complete opposite of their competitor, Disney. Disney on the other hand is exclusive and cautious when it comes to the content they create and share on their platform. This is due to Disney’s firm brand guidelines such as being family-friendly. NBCU’s Peacock is a streaming service that I believe could benefit from more original content. This past year Peacock took a big loss by losing Keeping Up With The Kardashians which ended after over ten years to switch over to a new Hulu show. As a classic show that has aired for years, Peacock is potentially losing a lot of viewers/subscribers who might switch to Hulu in order to follow the Kardashian family. Susan Rovner, the chairman of the entertainment content at NBCU explained how now, without Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Peacock is looking to grow original content and replace the Kardashians with new talent (O’Connell, 2021). I think that Susan’s plan to add more original content to Peacock is a great idea.

While I do believe that linear TV is a thing of the past, I do not predict that it is going to be done anytime soon. I believe that the near future will bring more creative ways of watching TV and streaming. One example of this would be HBO Max’s Euphoria. I think that it is creative for HBO Max to release Euphoria on both their streaming service and on linear TV weekly on Sundays at 9pm. For my generation, it is almost nostalgic to have to wait a week between episodes. This excites viewers and provides HBO Max with specific time frames to watch social interactions and other forms of viewer measurement. I think that linear TV will be around for quite some time, and that streaming services have to get creative with their options.
